Stud Rams

From the beginning, the selection of our stud rams has been the focus and foundation of our success. Rams have been selected based on visual appraisal, depth of pedigree, and with our ewe base always in mind.

Currently at stud are Scooby our Hampshire ram, Keota, a Rising Son son bred by Ted Greiner, and 63, a Sickels ram that is out of an Ultra son on a Nichols 44 daughter.

Reference Sires

As we hope you can tell by our web site, we give equal importance to both our ewe flock and our stud rams. Therefore, our selection of bucks has focused both on making wethers and developing females that become productive members of our flock. Some of our best rams have left their legacy through their daughters.

Past wether sires include bloodlines from Sickels, Slack, Nichols/McIlrath, Ott, McGolden, Hindman, and Ellerbrock. Although many of our bucks at first look like total outcrosses, after further inspection of their pedigrees you will see that most uniquely tie together.

Registered Suffolks

Currently one third of our flock are registered Suffolk ewes -- many tracing back to larger framed sheep of Luxford and Roger Nichols breeding. In the early 1990's we purchased two rams from Duane Sickels that added a new dimension of muscle and club lamb appeal. Our more current pedigrees include bloodlines rich with Slack and McIlrath breeding.

Our current stud buck is Chaos a home-bred Stunner ram.

Black Face Crossbreds

When we first started in 1988 we had a core group of commercial ewes that produced our 4-H market lambs. Over the years we have expanded this part of the flock with purchases of both ewes and rams. All of our crossbred ewes have been selected to specifically add a balance of muscle, size, touch, and eye appeal.

The majority of our commercial ewes are sired by Stunner a Hindman buck going back to both Jigsaw and Tuff and Scooby a Bianchi sired ram heavy in Cabaniss breeding.

Foundation Ewes

As time goes on and ewes age out or pass away, there are still those that have left such an impact on our flock that they deserve to continue to get credit. Listed are ewes that are no longer in our flock yet we just can't erase them from our web site or our hearts... Including the great 9503 family with Oreo and Cheerio.

Registered Southdowns

1995 brought Southdowns to the flock. During those first years we were fortunate to work personally with Duron Howard in getting a group of ewes from his keeper pen and his 1st place Fall Ram Lamb at the Ohio Southdown Show and Sale.

Over the years we have added bloodlines from Scenic View and Snowhite. In 2000, we leased a Rambo Son from Ray Robison of Sooner Southdowns.

Our current Southdown ram, Powerstroke, was the 2005 Reserve National Champion Southdown Ram bred by Gail Cole. Most of our ewes are sired either Showtime, the Scenic View ram that we purchased from the 2001 Eastern Stud Ram Sale or his son Topline. Showtime was sired by Shattuck 956 and out of Scenic View 9411, a 1/2 sister to the great Mayflower ram.

Flock History

Cornerstone Suffolks and Club Lambs began in the spring of 1988 with a single goal... to produce the complete sheep. Although our focus was primarily on larger framed, breeding type sheep, we had a high demand for 4-H and FFA project lambs. In the early 90's we began shifting gears solely to the production of club lambs. And we have never looked back.

Our flock stays at 65-70 select black face ewes and 15 or so registered Southdowns. We continually aim to produce show lambs that are moderate to large in frame size, heavy muscled, tight hided, and stylish. Over the years we have experienced both set backs and significant advances, but one thing stands true... We only offer breeding stock from our keeper pen! If they are not good enough for our flock how can we expect them to be good enough for yours.

Other Creatures That Share Our Space

Although sheep will always be our primary focus... we do share the barn and pastures with several other animals. We would not have those dream-filled nights without our trusted guardian llamas, Clyde and Spats.

Our sheep are housed and raised at Clayland Farm in Berryville, Virginia. Owner and Manager, David C. Childs runs approximately 75 commercial Angus cow/calf pairs and 15 quarter horses.

And of course, our passion for raising and showing sheep has spilled over into other livestock species. Our oldest son, Brett, is now attending VA Tech as an Animal Science major. While our two daughters, Kayla and Jordan, and our youngest son, Brady, are active in 4-H and FFA showing not only sheep, but market goats, market hogs, market steers and Shorthorn heifers.
