Although sheep will always be our primary focus... our flock shares their barn and pastures with several other animals. Both Brett and Kayla are active in 4-H and FFA showing not only sheep, but market hogs, market steers and Shorthorn heifers.

Our flock is housed at Clayland Farm in Berryville, Virginia. There are 180 acres on the main farm and over 300 acres in rented ground. The farm's main operations are beef cattle and quarter horses.

THE CHILDS CLAN

We have four beautiful children, Brett (16), Kayla (11), Jordan (7) and Brady (4). All of them are actively involved with the management of the flock and probably spend more time at the barn then anywhere else.

Brett's flock consist of registered Suffolks and crossbreds. Brett's main sports focus is wrestling. So needless to say, we have spent many hours traveling and sitting in gymnasium bleachers. This past year Brett was the Bull Run District Champion and the State Runner Up for his weight class at 103. Brett is also very active in both 4-H and FFA. Brett will be receiving his 4-H All Star award this summer.

Kayla started the Southdown flock long before the beginning of her 4-H career. She is devoted to the breed and insists on showing Southdown club lambs at the fair every year. Her interest include volunteering at the Senior Center, soccer, garden club, and sewing. Kayla made her theatrical debut this spring in the high school play, Cinderella.

SPATS

Born: November 8, 1996

Spats has been part of our flock since the fall of 2000. We purchased him after we lost several sheep to a dog attack. He has bonded exceptionally well with the sheep and is never far from their sight. He has adapted to our flock management and worming schedule and requires very little additional maintenance.

CLYDE

Born: September 7, 1998

Clyde was purchased at the same time as Spats. They are paternal brothers and are fierce protectors of the flock. We are currently working together with the Skymont Farms in Front Royal to train guard llamas. If you are interested in purchasing a guard llamas please contact us.

DUCHESS

Born: March 17, 2000
Sire: AHL Double Stuff 306
Dam: MSF Duchess Queen 1572
Breeder: McElhaney Stock Farm

This is Kayla's third year showing sheep and her first year with beef cattle. Kayla is enthusiastic about her Shorthorn and works with her everyday. Duchess is very easy going and has made a wonderful 4-H project.

Kayla purchased Duchess last fall in the Preferred Stock IV Production Sale in Hookstown, Pennsylvania.

Duchess was named Grand Champion Purebred Heifer at the 2001 Clarke-Frederick Spring Beef Show in Berryville, Virginia. Kayla also won Champion Novice Showman.

Duchess is due to calve next April to Surf.

CHER

Born: March 7, 2000
Sire: Stone Springs Quartermaster
Dam: HHF Cher 486
Breeder: Hively's Highland Farm

Brett has been showing steers on the county level for several years. Although he has had success with calves off the family farm, he was anxious to begin breeding his own cattle. After attending Louisville in 1999, Brett and Kayla made the decision to work together to start a small herd of Shorthorns.

Brett purchased Cher last fall in the Preferred Stock IV Production Sale in Hookstown, Pennsylvania.

Cher was named Grand Champion Shorthorn and Supreme Champion Heifer at the 2001 Clarke County Fair.

Cher is due to calve early next April to Surf.

MARKET HOGS

Both Brett and Kayla have enjoyed carrying the 4-H market hog projects on the county level for several years. Between the two of them they have had Grand Champion and/or Reserve Grand Champion Market Hog 5 out of 5 years at the Clarke County Fair.

We'd like to thank breeders such as Todd Brown, Feeser Genetics, Creager Family Farm, and Hoewischer Farms for breeding and offering us such tremendous show pigs!
